How we fight poverty
CARE cuts out poverty at its roots
We tackle the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice, in order to deliver lasting change in the lives of poor and vulnerable people.
We save lives in emergencies – and help people and communities build back safer and stronger for the future.
We work with the poorest and most vulnerable communities, developing long-term solutions to the problem of poverty. We aim to help people to help themselves.
And we multiply impact by using what we’ve learned about fighting poverty to influence broader social change, and end the injustices and inequalities that keep people poor.
We focus on women and girls
The majority of the 1.2 billion around the world who live in absolute poverty are women and girls. They are denied basic human rights. They have limited access to health care, to an education, to the opportunity to earn a living. They are denied a say in the decisions that affect their future.
But when women are healthier, their children and families are healthier. When girls get an education, they build better lives for themselves and their families. And when women have an income, they invest in their children and families, creating benefits for this generation and the next.
When one woman is helped out of poverty, she brings many other people with her.
Help us achieve our ambition
By 2020, we aim to support 150 million people from the most vulnerable and excluded communities to overcome poverty and social injustice.
