CARE’s work in Vanuatu
Consisting of 83 islands, Vanuatu is highly vulnerable to natural disasters including earthquakes and tropical storms. We started working here in 2008, with a focus on helping communities prepare for emergencies – such as Cyclone Pam in 2015.
Communities in Vanuatu have limited capacity to rebuild when disasters strike. So we help them develop sustainable emergency preparedness plans, and gain the skills and knowledge they need to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters – and to rebuild afterwards. We also work with local organisations, other NGOs and government bodies to ensure they can give communities the support they need.
